Amaranth

I've had the stomach virus the past few days which has helped me make very deliberate choices as what to put in my body. I ate a real meal last night and having a bowl of amaranth cereal with 2 teaspoons of sucanat sugar on top. (28 calories) (Dried cane sugar) kind of caramelly and delicious.

Don't judge a food by its cover

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to go for a gorgeous 5 mile walk with my sister. We walked along the Presidio Promenade that ended at Fort Mason. It was gorgeous! The weather was perfect, it was a clear, sunny day that afforded spectacular views of the bay and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. I ate a healthy breakfast before leaving - an egg and a slice of Ezekiel bread and a cup of coffee. At the end of mile 3 we went into a state park cafe called the Warming hut, love the name. I was trying to pick something healthy, so I didn't get a.muffin or a croissant. With great discrimination(or so I thought) I picked an Odwala superfood smoothie. I took my first sip and it seemed quite sweet. My eyes fell out of my head when I saw just how much sugar was in it. 37 grams! That is the equivalent of approximately 9 tsp of sugar!!!! Man oh man was I disappointed. All the reading I've been doing about health and weight points to the spikes of sugar as the biggest culprit in weight gain. I was bummed that I was fooled into consuming a candy bar masquerading as a super food.

Stress and chocolate

Yesterday I was packing for a trip to CA and had every intention of cleaning the house before leaving, so dh could have. a clean slate with the kids. But of course I didn't get to it. I had a late breakfast and a fistful of Hersheys kisses for lunch. I know. Anyhow one bad decision led to more chocolate at the airport..heh. The snickers bar was incredibly worth it though :) Promise to be better..The Ramones helped you burn 300 calories! Woot..I need more focus on exercise again, been off that for a week now. Will restart C25K on Monday.

Quinoa salmon salad

Quinoa, field greens, mango glazed salmon w a little bit of goat cheese and roasted pumpkin seeds. You would think this is a guilt-free dinner except that I fed the rest of my family Mac n cheese and chicken nuggets! A little guilty about that ...

i could apply this a lot of things in life - especially at the gym!

Let them eat cake

I just ate a piece of cake, it's 9:30pm

The ramone's

I worked out to the ramone's this morning- great high energy beats ! Burned over 300 calories. Then I came home starving... Was going to eat amaranth but wanted something hearty. I dug out most of the bread thinking it would save me calories and carbs .... But then I ate it while the rest was toasting ! Oh well the thought was there .

Healthy snack

I like to have a Wasa cracker or two when the kids have their after school snack. There is not too much caloric damage and I also get to eat something yummy, so I don't feel too deprived. I spread one with a cilantro almond chutney and the second with almond butter and raspberry jelly, so it feels like a dessert. Green chutney: Blend 1 bunch of fresh cilantro, an inch piece of ginger, 1 jalapeño, 1 handful of roasted almonds, just brown for a few minutes on the stovetop. Add fresh squeezed lime and salt to taste. Store in a reusable glass jar in the fridge for upto 10 days. Taste, if its too spicy, tweak ginger and remove jalapeño seeds next time. To salvage spicy batch, add more cilantro and almonds, very little water. Enjoy on crackers or bread.

Lunch

Trying to reduce calories and wheat, ate a turkey, avocado and goat cheese open face sandwich. Oh, and I just ate a piece of dark chocolate. I think every post is going to end with chocolate.

Breakfast?

Here is my breakfast. Cherry kale dirt poop smoothly. Gritty and kinda gross, but I drank it. :)
So here i am - going to be forty in 6 months. I want to feel strong, feel healthy, look good, i want to wear a bikini at the pool this summer with the kids and feel good about myself (and not compare to all these crazy athletic boulder moms). I am committed to exercise, eating right and meditating. I want to look good and feel good. I am excited about this blog with anja - we can keep each other accountable and inspire each other when we are feeling down about this journey.

My goal is to hike a 10,000 foot mountain with my sister by the end of the summer. I am not sure which mountain we are going to hike because there are so many amazing hikes within hours of my house. While training for this, i hope to get strong, loose the big butt and 20 lbs!

we can do it anj!!!!!

30 by 40

So I'm turning 40 this year. I am determined to be fabulous. I want that shocked reaction from people when I tell them my age. "No way! I thought you were 28!" Yup, I know it's vain, but I am ok with it. I am tired of waiting to look better when I have more time to myself, when the kids are in school, when Im on vacation, when i make money etc. More time is a mirage, there will always be other things that take precedence over my health and body. I have to make my health a priority. Good health is a lifestyle, that I have to adopt now, before my metabolism comes to a complete halt. My dream is to go trekking in the Himalayas with my kids when they are 18 and 15, that is still 12 years from now. I will be 52 by then, I have to take control of my body now, so that I will be able to do that then. My current weight is 158 pounds, my goal weight is 130, my birthday is in October..so my goal is to lose 30 pounds in time for my 40th birthday. This blog will chronicle that journey.
